The Problem

A Brand Without a Storefront

The brand idea — celebrating the bold, lovable spirit of bulldogs through wearable art — needed somewhere to live. Off-the-shelf print-on-demand templates produced generic stores with stock photography and uninspired layouts, none of which could carry the brand's character.

Original Artwork at Scale

A t-shirt brand lives or dies by its catalog. Stock templates and clip-art designs would have looked interchangeable with a hundred other apparel stores, so every graphic — typography-led wordmarks, character illustrations, horror-themed concepts — had to be original work, produced in volume and tagged consistently for a clean browsing experience.

Photography, Not Stock

Generic mockup photos undermine a brand the moment a customer lands on the site. The store needed custom product photography (lifestyle and on-surface studio shots) that matched the energy of the designs — so the catalog looked like one coherent brand, not a dropshipping aggregator.

Operations From Zero

Beyond the storefront, the brand needed a real fulfillment pipeline (Printify + SwiftPOD), transparent shipping and returns policies, a size chart to reduce fit-related returns, and a customer-support path — all designed before the first order shipped.

Constraints & Considerations

  • Shopify Platform — Built entirely on Shopify, so the storefront had to work within the platform's section/theme model. Customization lived in theme templates, sections, and a custom CSS skin layered on top of the base theme.
  • Catalog Scalability — With 200+ designs across multiple collections, the taxonomy (Design Style × Bulldog Type × Audience) had to be discoverable in two clicks from any page, without overwhelming the shopper.
  • Print-on-Demand Constraints — Printify and SwiftPOD drive the variant matrix (color × size × design), so product pages had to surface swatches and sizes cleanly without manual duplication of every design-file pairing.
  • Brand Consistency — Every asset — logo, typography, photography, color, copy — needed to feel like the same brand, from the homepage hero to the returns policy page.
  • Solo Ownership — As a solo build, the project required covering brand, design, photography direction, development, and operations end-to-end — without splitting focus across teams.

Approach & Execution

Bulldog Vibes was built from scratch in four parallel tracks: brand identity, original artwork, custom photography, and the Shopify storefront itself. Each track reinforced the others — the brand informed the art direction, the art direction informed the photography, and the storefront tied everything together.

Brand & Visual Identity

Designed the Bulldog Vibes wordmark with a custom illustrated bulldog mark and the tagline lock-up "Apparel with Attitude." Selected Arsenal for display and GTStandard-M (at multiple weights) for body, and locked in a warm gold + dark neutrals palette that gets re-applied via a custom theme skin (`theme-skin-3.css`) across every component.

Original T-Shirt Designs (200+)

Produced 200+ original designs across three style tracks — text-only typography, graphic-only character illustrations, and graphic + text combinations. Designs are organized by audience (Men, Women, Unisex), bulldog type (English/American/Olde, Frenchie/Pug), and themed collections (Featured, Horror, Collector's Edition). Each design follows a structured naming convention with a numeric SKU prefix and version indicators (V1, V2, V3...) so variants of the same concept read as a family in the catalog.

Custom Product & Lifestyle Photography

Shot original product photography for the entire catalog — on-surface studio shots styled with sneakers, dog toys, and accessories that reinforce the brand's playful voice, plus lifestyle model photography for the homepage hero. Consistent framing, lighting, and props across the catalog make the 200+ products read as one coherent brand instead of an aggregator feed.

Custom Shopify Storefront

Built the store on a Shopify premium theme with a block-based home builder, then layered the brand-specific skin on top. The homepage composes a hero, a three-pillar trust line (Free Delivery / Easy Return Policy / Donate Your Returns!), a tabbed Featured / For Her / For Him collection, a Latest Collections grid, and newsletter capture. Collection pages use a sticky sidebar filter; product pages combine gallery, color swatches, size selector, trust signals, Wishlist, Compare, and a sticky Add to Cart on mobile.

Operations: Print-on-Demand & Policies

Wired fulfillment through Printify (global provider network) and SwiftPOD (US-based print partner). Wrote a transparent shipping policy (single-item shipping fee, free on 2+, 4–7 day domestic, 10–20 day international) and a 30-day return policy that turns returns into a brand-positive act by asking customers to donate instead of shipping back — reducing reverse-logistics cost while reinforcing the brand voice.

Customer Support & Conversion Features

Integrated Shopify Inbox for live chat, a native contact form ("Drop Us A Line") with Name / Email / Phone / Message fields, a Follow on Shop button for native push relationships, and email capture ("exclusive updates, deals, and the latest Bulldog Vibes delivered straight to your inbox"). The custom size chart cuts down the #1 source of apparel returns — wrong size — by helping shoppers self-select.

Outcome & Impact

200+ Original Designs

Built and shipped a 200+ design catalog spanning typography, character illustration, and themed collections — every graphic produced specifically for the brand, no stock art or templates.

Custom Shopify Storefront

Delivered a fully custom Shopify theme with a branded skin, block-based homepage builder, sticky sidebar filters, custom product UI (swatches, sizes, trust signals), Wishlist, Compare, newsletter capture, and live chat — all on a mobile-responsive foundation.

Original Photography

Produced original on-surface product photography for the entire catalog plus lifestyle model photography for the homepage — turning a print-on-demand catalog into a brand that looks like one consistent voice across every listing.

Print-on-Demand Operations

Wired Printify + SwiftPOD for fulfillment, documented transparent shipping and a 30-day return policy, integrated Shopify Inbox for live chat, and added a custom size chart to reduce fit-related returns — all before the first order shipped.

Key Takeaway

A print-on-demand apparel brand only feels like a brand when the assets are original. Stock templates and stock photography may ship faster, but they read as interchangeable — and once that impression is set, the store competes on price alone. Doing the artwork, photography, and storefront as one coherent build is what gives the catalog its own voice.
